Want to relaunch your career but worried that you don’t have the right skills or
experience to do what you really want to do? You’re not alone. I have been myself exactly where you are, a few times actually, and so have many others.

Over the course of your life so many things will change and with that people decide to switch career paths; whether driven by a change in interests and values, or a desire for different earning potential or more flexible work hours. It may not be easy, but regardless of where you are in your journey, relaunching your career and doing something different is perfectly possible.

Here are five ways to successfully make the move.

1. Believe that you have what you need.

When undertaking something that is a challenge, it’s easy to become overwhelmed with reasons as to why it’s not a good idea. This fear of change can quickly put a halt to your career transition before it has even begun. Keep reminding yourself that everything you need is already within you.
Working to overcome your fears and the excuses you make for yourself is vital if you’re going to take the first steps towards making a transition into a new career.

2. Don’t let other people’s fear stop you.

Most people aren’t prepared to give up their comfortable job, where they’re already earning a good salary and have put in years of work to advance and develop. Be wary of people that are playing it safe, as they’ll be the first to tell you that the career change you desire is not attainable.

Anything you want to achieve is within your reach if you’re determined enough to achieve it and willing to start over. Always keep your end goal in mind and continually remind yourself of the bigger picture of why you’re making the change. Put other people’s fears aside, and focus all of your energy on your way forward towards achieving the career you want.

3. Focus on your skills, not just your experience.

When making a move into a new area it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by your lack of experience within the field. But perhaps it’s time to stop focusing only on your professional history and to start looking at the multitude of transferable skills that you’ve gathered throughout your unique career and life journey.
By making a list of your many experiences, skills, accolades and personal victories, you may come across a number of soft skills that you weren’t even aware of!

Most people don’t appreciate the full scope of what they can bring to the table. Remember that in many cases the specific, industry-related skills can be learned, but it’s much harder to train certain soft skills such as teamwork and leadership qualities.

4. Just get started.

When approaching your career relaunch from your current situation it’s easy to feel as though your dream career is a million miles away. Rather focus on the fact that you already have everything you need to get started, and things will begin to appear a lot more manageable.

Although the difference between ‘there’ and ‘here’ may seem vast, remember that to breach the gap simply consists of a multitude of manageable steps that need to be approached one by one.

You may not know what all the steps are from the outset, but as long as you take the first step, you can start learning what you need to make your career change a success.

5. Start establishing your credibility from the get go.

Commit to your new career journey and share it with the world. Whether you start writing a blog or sharing posts about your new field of choice, or simply start talking with friends and colleagues about your new direction; it’s important to start building your credibility in the field.
Not only will this help grow your confidence, but it will undoubtedly open up new opportunities for you as people start to see your new potential as a future expert in the field.
